Overview

The Deputy Head of Junior School English plays a key role in delivering a coordinated and systematic English Language curriculum from Year 1 to Year 9. The primary responsibility of the Deputy Head of Junior School English is to lead the ongoing development of English Language instruction, to raise student achievement and articulate a coherent scope and sequence of English Language learning across the Junior School (Years 1 – 9) in close collaboration with the Head of Junior School English. Below are the key responsibilities of the position, however, are not exclusive and will involve the Head of Teaching and Learning (JS English) responding to the needs of the school and programs.

 

Teaching & Learning

• Demonstrate high standards of teaching and a strong working understanding of current pedagogical approaches for English as an additional language
• Communicate, apply and share contemporary educational research, theory and practice in pedagogy, assessment and reporting in relation to teaching and learning in English language
• Model the highest standards of professional practice and interaction with students and staff.
• Regularly evaluate the teaching of the Junior School English Program to identify effective practice and areas for improvement with the view to keep improving the quality of teaching
• Support, assist and advise teachers in matters of classroom management, homework expectations, subject schedules, assessment, report writing, cross marking.
• Implement effective learning and assessment frameworks that use data, benchmarks, and observation to monitor students’ progress

 

Curriculum Responsibilities

• Oversee the development and implementation of the English Language curriculum (Year 1 – 9)
• Facilitate and guide differentiation practises to meet student needs
• Build a process of regular reflection to evaluate and review the English language program
• Oversee the auditing and ongoing records of student performances organised by the Middle and Primary School Coordinators
• Oversee the management of students at risk
• Review student results for discussion and goal setting with the Head of Junior School English to set parameters around effective tracking of student’s academic results throughout the year
•Collaborate and coordinate with colleagues to ensure students are appropriately assigned to classes

 

Administrative Responsibilities

• Manage the Junior School resources in collaboration with the Head of Junior School English
• Design and develop initiatives to promote English across year levels
• Organise and oversee English Language competitions and programs
• Share student success stories with the Head of Junior School English and wider community
• Liaise and report teaching and learning issues with the Head of Junior School English
• Collaborate with Middle and Primary School coordinators to ensure constructive feedback is given to all teaching staff
• Maintain and update School documentation
• Communicate with parents, students and staff on matters of curriculum, and teaching and learning

 

Leadership
• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive semester based professional learning program for staff
• Oversee and Implement the Professional Recognition and Evaluation Program (PREP) for staff
• Model a positive attitude that promotes student engagement and success in English Language learning
• Participate in curriculum information events and speak with parents as required
• Attend regular leadership meetings under the guidance of the Head of Junior School English to assist with the planning of the wider school
• Review the teaching and learning framework based on latest research and data in consultation with the Head of Junior School English
• Promote English Language learning in the school community

Academic qualifications
• Registration as a teacher in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, Eire, the USA or equivalent internationally recognised teacher registration.
• Relevant undergraduate degree in teaching
• Postgraduate and additional academic qualifications will be favourably considered

In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Minimum of Bachelors degree, with postgraduate qualifications considered highly favourably.
• Education/teacher qualifications and registration or ability to obtain registration.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate, apply and share contemporary educational research, theory and practice in pedagogy, assessment and reporting in English as an Additional Language.
• The ability to collaborate and build effective collaborative teams
• Appreciation of and willingness to work within the complexities of the current geopolitical environment.
